K-HITS fans will remember Ray Sawyer as the energetic lead singer of “Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show: Tonic for the Soul”. His raspy, soulful southern rock tones delivered their breakthrough single “Cover of the Rolling Stone”. “Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show: Tonic for the Soul” produced 40 gold records, along with an array of hit singles including “Only Sixteen”, “A Little Bit More”, “Sharing the Night Together”, “When You’re In Love with a Beautiful Woman” and “Sexy Eyes”. All these singles were certified million-sellers. Sawyer left the band in 1983, and in the ’90s, he went back on the road as “Dr. Hook featuring Ray Sawyer.” Rob Grill, lead singer of “The Grass Roots”, was one of the most recognizable voices on radio from the mid ’60s to the ’70s. “The Grass Roots” went on to produce two gold albums and one platinum album. From 1967 to 1972 “The Grass Roots” set a record for being on the Billboard charts for an unbelievable 307 straight weeks. “The Grass Roots” generated 29 hit singles; 13 of which went gold. Their most popular singles include “Let’s Live for Today”, Midnight Confessions”, “Sooner or Later” and “Temptation Eyes”. The band split up in the fall of 1976 when they released their final album “Out in the Open”. Rob Grill began his solo career in 1979 and in the ’80s Grill formed “The Grass Roots starring Rob Grill”.
